Dorm Network

  • You will connect to the internet through our high speed broadband connections which are installed in all University Dorm Rooms and through the wireless network in other parts of campus.  You will need to have a 10/100 network card in your computer and a CAT5 network cable.  (Standard offering on most computers.)  No other equipment is required. Individual dial-up/broadband accounts are not permitted.

  • An updated subscription-based antivirus program is required on all residential student computers that use Microsoft's Windows OS.  Sophos Antivirus is provided for all full-time students at no additional charge.  Please check the Welcome Message in your Campbell Email for more information. 

  • File sharing has, in the past, interfered with official University Business and valid educational endeavors and therefore, is not allowed at any time. Please delete Kazaa, IMesh, Limewire, Aries, and/or any other file sharing programs on your machine before coming to campus.

  • We also recommend that all students uninstall AOL Internet Access Software before attempting to logon to our network.  This does not include AOL Instant Messenger software.

  • Students should check for and clean their computers of “spyware” before attempting to logon to the Campbell network.  There are several free tools available for spyware detection and removal.  The best are: Adaware (www.lavasoftusa.com), Windows Defender (www.microsoft.com), and Spybot (www.safer-networking.org) 

  • You must install all Critical/High Priority operating system updates on Windows -based machines.  Go to www.windowsupdate.com for more information. Additionally, your machine should be setup to check for updates automatically.

  • Please bring all setup/restore disks and documentation with your computer. We cannot help you at the helpdesk without your disks.  Additionally, if you require warranty service, your vendor may require you to have the disks.

  • Students are not allowed to have a wireless router or access point anywhere on the Campbell University campus.  If a non-university owned wireless access point or router is discovered in your room, your network connection will be disabled for the remainder of the semester and the router/access point will be confiscated.

Wireless Network
Campbell University is now providing wireless access to the internet in specific locations for laptops with Windows 2000, XP and Vista.

Note: If you don't connect the first try, run scans for viruses and spyware, then try again. Machines with as few as five pieces of spyware have had their wireless signal choked by the amount of traffic on their machine. You should also make sure that you have the most modern version of the driver (software) for your card installed. You will have to obtain that from the manufacturer's website.
