COURSE TITLE: Integrative Medicine

DESCRIPTION: Herbal remedies recently being used as alternative solution to treat and prevent different diseases. The most commonly available herbs and natural products will be covered concerning their therapeutic effect and the dosage forms. In addition an overview of the Eastern therapies will be presented.

JUSTIFICATION: This course provides a knowledge base for the future applications of different herbs and natural products acting on: (1) heart and circulation; (2) liver and digestive system ( 3 )Central nervous system (4) kidney and reproductive system (5) immune system

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:
    This course should enable the pharmacy student to include herbal medication into drug therapy and advice patients as well:
    1. Students become familiar with oriental medicinal approach in disease treatment.
    2. Learn how to prepare: infusion, decoction, tincture etc
    3. Learn about active ingredients and synergetic effect using whole plant.
    4. Aware of side effects, drug- herb, herb-herb interaction
    5. Use of essential oils
    6. Herbs in diet
    7. This course promotes the mission of Campbell University by encouraging students to pursue, discover, and share with others a knowledge of integrative medicine to improve the health of patients under their care.
EXAMS AND GRADING:
    Two regular examinations (100 points each) and a project report (100 points) will be administered during the semester according to the attached schedule. An optional comprehensive final examination will be administered during Finals Week to take the place of any exam missed due to illness. Final course grades will be assigned according to the individual's average performance on these exams and report based upon the following scale:
    • 90-100  A
    • 80-89   B
    • 70-79   C
    • 60-69   D
    • below 60   F
    A student will be excused from a scheduled examination only for personal illness upon mission of a written order from a physician. Any student who misses an examination will be required to complete the comprehensive final examination.
