Neck
  • Sternocleidomastoid
    • Origin:  Medial clavicle and manubrium of sternum
    • Insertion: Mastoid process
    • Action: Both sides flex the neck ; Right side rotates to the left and lateral flexion to the right; Left side rotates to the right and lateral flexion to the lef
    • Nerve: Spinal accessory (11th Cranial, C2-3)

Neck
  • Splenius Capitis
    • Origin: Lower half of the ligamentum Nuchae and the spinous processes of the 7th Cervical and upper 3 or 4 Thoracic
    • Insertion: Mastoid process and occipital bone
    • Action:Both sides: Extension of the head and neck; Right side: rotation and lateral flexion right
    • Nerve: Posterior lateral branches of cervical nerves  (C4-8)

    • Origin: Spinous processes of 3rd – 6th Thoracic vertebrae
    • Insertion: Transverse processes of the 1st three cervical vertebrae
    • Action: Both sides: Extension of the head and neck; Right side: rotation and lateral flexion right; Left side: rotation and lateral flexion left.
    • Nerve: Posterior lateral branches of cervical nerves  (C4-8)

    • Origin: Transverse Processes of C3-6
    • Insertion: Inner border and upper surface of 1st rib
    • Action: Elevates 1st rib; Flexion, lateral flexion and contralateral rotation of neck.
    • Nerve:Ventral rami of C3-8

    • Origin: Transverse processes of C5-7
    • Insertion:Outer surface of 2nd rib
    • Action:Elevates 2nd rib; flexion, lateral flexion and slight contralateral rotation of neck
    • Nerve: Ventral rami of C6-8

    • Origin: Transverse Processes of C2-7
    • Insertion:Superior surface of 1st rib
    • Action: Elevates 2nd rib; flexion, lateral flexion and slight contralateral rotation of neck

    • Insertion: Posterior ribs, cervical  transverse processes
    • Action:  Extension and Lateral flexion of the spine
    • Nerve: Posterior branches of the spinal nerves.

  • Longissiumus
    • Origin: Thoracolumbar aponeurosis from sacrum, lumbar and thoracic transverse processes.
    • Insertion: Cervical and thoracic transverse processes, mastoid process
    • Action: Extension and Lateral flexion of the spine
    • Nerve: Posterior branches of the spinal nerves.

    • Origin: Ligamentum nuchae, cervical and  spinous processes
    • Insertion: cervical and thoracic spinous processes, occipital bone
    • Action: Extension and Lateral flexion of the spine

    • Insertion: Cartilage of the 5th, 6th, and 7th ribs and the xiphoid process
    • Action: Both sides: Lumbar Flexion; Right Side: lateral flexion right; Left Side: lateral flexion left
    • Nerve: Intercostal (T7-12)

Abdominal Muscles
  • External Oblique
    • Origin: Borders of the lower 8 ribs at the side of the chest, dovetailing with the serratus anterior
    • Insertion: Anterior ½ of the crest of the ilium, the inguinal ligament, the crest of the pubis, and the fascia of the rectus abdominis muscle at the lower front
    • Action: Both sides: Lumbar Lateal Flexion; Right Side: lateral flexion right, rotation Left; Left Side: Lumbar lateral flexion left and rotation right
    • Nerve: Intercostal (T8-12), iliohypogastric (T12, L1), ilioinguinal (L1)

  • Internal Oblique
    • Origin: Upper ½ of the inguinal ligament, anterior 2/3 of the crest of the ilium and the lumbar fascia
    • Insertion: Costal cartilages of the 8th, 9th, and 10th ribs and linea alba
    • Action: Both sides: Lumbar lateral Flexion; Right Side: lateral flexion right, rotation right; Left Side: Lumbar lateral flexion left and rotation left
    • Nerve:Intercostal (T8-12), iliohypogastric (T12, L1), ilioinguinal (L1)

  • Transversus Abdominis
    •  Origin: Outer 1/3 of the inguinal ligament, Inner rim of the iliac crest, Inner surface of the cartilage of the lower 6 ribs, Lumbar fascia
    • Insertion: Crest of the pubis and the iliopectineal line, Abdominal aponeurosis to the linea alba
    • Action: Forced expiration by pulling the abdominal wall inward
    • Nerve: Intercostal (T8-12), iliohypogastric (T12, L1), ilioinguinal (L1)

  • Quadratus Lumborum
    • Origin:  Posterior inner lip of the iliac crest
    • Insertion: Approximately ½ the length of the lower border of the 12th rib and the transverse process of the upper four lumbar vertebrae
    • Action: Lateral flexion to the same side, stabilizes pelvis and lumbar spine
    • Nerve: T12, L1 branches
