The Convocation Center is named in memory of John William Pope, Jr., a 1975 graduate of Campbell University with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration. John was a staunch supporter of Campbell until his untimely death in March of 2004. His family, through the John William Pope Foundation, has continued John’s legacy of strong support for Campbell by their generous contribution to the construction of the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center.
The arena housed by the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center is named in memory of Gilbert Craig Gore, late son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Gore of Sunset Beach, NC. Mr. Ed Gore is a 1952 graduate of Campbell College.
The arena will serve not only as a sports venue but also as a gathering place for community concerts and events. In addition to the Gilbert Craig Gore Arena, the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center features a Sports Hall of Fame Lobby, the Ed Gore Family Hospitality Suite, a 5,000 square foot student fitness center, classrooms for the Exercise Science Department, a practice court, wrestling practice room, offices and locker rooms for basketball, volleyball, and wrestling
The concourse around the arena houses public amenities, a first-aid station, a sound room, and four full-service concessions.
Construction of the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center is on schedule for completion in September of 2008.
