Hong Kong professor speaks to honor students

Dr. Joyce Nip of Hong Kong Baptist University explained the Hong Kong press during a recent Journalists in Film and Fiction class. She is a Fulbright Visiting Scholar affiliated with the Philip Merrill College of Journalism, University of Maryland, College Park. Before joining the academia in 1993, Nip worked in television, newspaper, and magazine news, in both the English and Chinese-language news media. Nip also met with international students to explore careers in journalism. Nip was one of six guest speakers who visited Campbell University’s honor students this semester as part of a special grant from the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities.

Journalist George Archibald, standing, recently spoke to honors students in Michael Ray Smith's Journalists in Film and Fiction class. A 35-year veteran of the newsroom, Archibald broke many national stories for The Washington Times. For instance, he was the first reporter to connect Geraldine Ferraro, a vice presidential candidate, to her family's real estate improprieties in Manhattan. In the photograph from left, at bottom, clockwise, are Catherine Wiggs, Sarah Franks, Kristen Harris, Tiffany Dorrin, Archibald, Tiffany Earl, Lee Chong, Luke Custer and Yi Wan Chan. Archibald is one of the many visiting speakers who helped students explore the images of reporters in mass media. The class provides some opposition views to the one-dimensional stereotypes associated with journalists. Archibald Interview.mp3

Staff members of the award-winning Campbell Times student newspaper celebrated the newspaper's makeover with a recent dinner at Cracker Barrel. Aaron Thomas, front right, not only contributed to the newspaper but he earned bylines in area newspapers with his freelance work. Pete Marozzi, editor, planned the event with adviser Lisa Farmer. The newspaper went from a broadsheet size newspaper to a four-color tabloid-size newspaper. The redesigned newspaper is so popular, they remain on the racks for just a few minutes and copies for the archives are nearly non-existent.
